Meat Industry Essay Example for Free
Meat Industry Essay People all over the world eat meat for its nutritional value and taste. The United States Department of Agriculture reports that in the year 2011 people in the U.S consumed 25.6 billion pounds of beef. Most of this meat was produced in America. A Holistic approach to food production is important in order to improve the quality of beef. What we feed our cattle, the housing conditions and the slaughter procedure directly impacts our food. What the farmers feed cattle directly affects the quality of beef for the consumer. The cow has many more benefits from eating grass than being fed corn. It is a lot healthier for cows to consume grass because that is what their stomachs are made for. The stomachs have three sections that are made specifically for digesting grass (Healthy Theory -Corn-Fed Vs. Grass-Fed Beef). Today, most cows are put on a diet that is based on corn. The cows used to be fed grass and roam free but since than there have been changes. The idea about feeding cattle grain began during World War II. It all started when farmers were producing more grain than the American population could handle, so the rest of it was fed to cows. It was discovered that feeding a cow different types of grains fattened them up a lot faster than when cows were consuming grass. With a grass fed diet, it takes cows about five years to reach 1,200 pounds. However, with the grain-based diet it takes a cow about 390 days to get to a reachable weight for slaughter (Healthy Theory -Corn-Fed Vs. Grass-Fed Beef). Also, the producer benefits more from feeding his cows corn because it is cheaper than grass. Therefore, a diet based on corn is more cost effective but the quality of meat has less nutritional value (Why Grass Fed- Health Benefits of Grass Fed Beef). The consumer benefits more from meat that comes from cows that consume grass rather than in-taking different types of grains. The cow is a lot healthier and happier when it is eating grass, which results in higher quality meat. Since cowsââ¬â¢ stomachs are meant to break down grass, a corn based diet causes changes in the digestion of a cow leading to serious health problems, such as diarrhea, ulcers, and a weakened immune system. As a result of these issues, the cows are given antibiotics to help prevent this from occurring, which makes the meat unhealthier (Healthy Theory -Corn-F ed Vs. Grass-Fed Beef). Another huge topic of concern is the disregard of animal welfare. These animals arenââ¬â¢t being cared for and they are treated as units of production (Learn About The Issues). In order to fatten up cows in time for slaughter, many farmers put them in feedlots. The conditions these cows go through are unbearable. As many cows as possible are crammed into each pen. The result of this is massive amounts of waste covering the animals living space (The Issues Animal Welfare). This causes the air to be unhealthy and creates many gases and diseases that arenââ¬â¢t wanted. During the whole time the cows are in the feedlot they are breathing in methane gas. Large amounts of methane are bad for animals because it takes away oxygen from the air, which can affect the central nervous system (2- Health Effects of Methane). The alternative is a more holistic way, which allows the cattle to roam around freely on huge pastures until they get fat enough to get slaughtered. In the United States, animal welfare is being ignored, because cows are being treated i n a cruel and unhealthy way. When they are living in the feedlots, they are covered with manure and arenââ¬â¢t being cared for. As soon as cows are fat enough to get slaughtered, they are sent to the closest slaughterhouse. On their journey they are faced with heartbreaking situations. They are often transported from 1,200 to 1,500 miles away in scorching hot weather or freezing temperatures. Dr. Lester Friedlander, a former U.S. Department of Agriculture veterinarian inspector said, ââ¬Å"They are crammed onto trucks and go without food or water for daysâ⬠. When it is cold, they are in the back of a trailer with nothing covering them. As the driver drives sixty miles per hour, cows are being exposed to a variety of extreme weather. Many cows collapse in hot weather. While they are traveling they urinate. After sometime it begins to freeze while their hooves are standing in it. Also, the fur of the cows ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ freezes to the sides of the trucks until workers pry them off with crowbarsâ⬠(Cow Transport and Slaughter). When the cows get to the slaughterhouse, they are often in bad conditions. Most of them are sick and cannot walk because they are too weak. In order to move weak and injured cows they are dragged along with a bulldozer by a chain around their neck or leg. Even though they are in bad shape, cows are still being used for their meat because it means more money in the producerââ¬â¢s pocket. If some of the cows are able to walk, they are still abused. Workers beat them with a metal rod in order to move them faster (The Humane Society of the United States). Also, before they are killed the cows are lined up to wait for their turn to be stunned so that they will pass out before they get slaughtered. Sometimes the stunning procedure does not work. Ramon Moreno, a slaughterhouse worker has stated that he often has to cut the legs off of cows that are completely conscious. ââ¬Å"They blink. They make noises, he says. The head moves, the eyes are wide and looking around. â⬠¦ They die piece by piece. If workers try to report that the cows are still alive they risk loosing their jobs (Cow Transport and Slaughter). After cows reach a certain weight they are ready to be slaughtered for meat consumption. The process of turning cows into packe d meat can cause the meat to be infected. Before they are slaughtered, cows are cleaned. However, in some cases not well enough. The waste of the cow can get into the processed meat that is being cut by the workers. This can contaminate the meat with E-coli, which is a type of bacteria that can lead to death. ââ¬Å"According to Centers for Disease Control estimates, up to 20,400 cases of E. coli infection and 500 deaths from E-coli disease occur annually in the United Statesâ⬠(Escherichia Coli 0157:H7). Another disease that is created in these fast paced industries is mad cow disease. (the issues-slaughterhouses and processing). Mad cow disease affects the cowââ¬â¢s nervous system and it causes the cow to act confused and loose control of the ability to walk (What is Mad Cow Disease). When people eat infected beef they may contract a human version of mad cow disease. It affects the nervous system causing depression and loss of coordination. As it becomes more severe, it causes dementia (The Basics of Mad Cow Disease). With our modern day technology, slaughterhouses are able to kill thousands and thousands of cowââ¬â¢s every day. There are many solutions that can change the food industry to produce their meat in a more animal friendly way. To help cut back more meat being produced in factories, consumers can support local farms by eating food that is grown locally. Holistic farming care for their animals and focus on getting delicious, healthy meat than just producing more and more for profit. The food quality of holistic farmed meat is a lot better because the cows are raised and treated well as opposed to when the animals are abused their whole life. If we really want a change, it is up to Americans to demand that. Currently, laws support the industrial farming methods and lack the attempt of helping small farms grow. An example is that American tax money goes to support research and the operating cost of large food producing companies (Learn About the Issues). In order for there to be a change, citizens need to become aware of the process. Change will happen by the consumer supporting politicians who are looking to change the food industry. Consequently, producers would need to be more focused on the care of the animals than earning as much money as possible. What American farmers feed their cattle, where they raise them and how they get slaughtered directly impacts the quality of our food. It is important for consumers to be aware of the United States food industry because there is so much more behind the food brought to you in the supermarket. If the consumer buys meat that is produced holistically, and legislation puts focus on the care of animals, the food industry will be forced to improve their methods.

Unethical Behaviours in the Workplace
Unethical Behaviours in the Workplace Matthew D. Andrews Jr. Monday Wednesday 10:30-12:10 It is moment of time to where you need to fix the talent that is influential to an organizations most imperative strength for a business. Organizations need to act in ways that acknowledge the strategic significance of talent, and to make outline and strategic determinations based on their capability to entice and direct talent. For years, CEOs have communicated about their people as a most significant advantage, but they have not performed appropriately when it comes to making their corporate plans, their organization intentions, and their talent management preparations. It is essential currently, that organizations make talent management a key portion of their organization strategy and management decision-making. How can they do this? First, they need to distinguish that the business world has transformed, and that talent is, in fact, the most critical asset in almost all business. A number of major modifications, counting the globalization of organizations, developments in technology, and a continuous rate of change in the business atmosphere, have made this happen. These fluctuations have created a world where the method in which businesses are operated and their talent accomplished to become the major determining factor of their efficiency. Positioning talent as the important decision maker of business usefulness requires that organizations move away from the current job-based style to business plan and management. They need to start thinking about business strategic plan that help give focus on the strength and abilities that are required in order to implement a business approach. This proficiency study needs to be established on the responsibilities and behaviors that an businesses need to implemented, rather than the expansion of job growth. Businesses need to concentrate on the prospective foundations of the talent that is desirable to execute business approaches. This analysis needs to contemplate numerous types of commitment relations with talent, as well as whether it is best client in the business or recruit them by force. Choose correctly on what talent you pick for job. One key to successful business talent thinking in todays world of work is observing outside the job-based worker model of handling talent. What is mainly exciting and thought-provoking about growing the right talent/business tactic arrangement for an business is the number of possibilities that can be deliberated and executed given todays business atmosphere. Instead of considering jobs for certain people and give wrong job to inexperienced person, business now have a lot ways to getting the key talent they must have in order to do the responsibilities that are asked of them to execute their plans. A second key to growing an successful talent and business plan is making talent accessibility and talent approachability is consider a strategy success in the business world because jobs want to hired people that wanted staying power in the business and not have to worry lose them (The Huffington Post, 2017). In this current time, approximately 120 million people go into a workplace someplace in the United States. In this current time, almost fifty percent of these employees personally observed some kind of ethical wrongdoing, concurring to a recent survey accompanied by the Washington, D.C.-based Ethics Resource Center (ERC). We are not speaking about employees being aware of CFO carry out insider trade fraud. More probable, it is someone who lied to an employer or gave in a fabricated expense account. Recorded below, concurring to the ERC study, are the Three most recurrently detected disreputable behaviors in the U.S. businesses. 1. Misusing company time Whether it is lying for someone who end up showing up to work late or modifying a time sheet, abusing company time tops the cake as a big no-no in the business. This category consist of distinguishing that one of your co-workers is doing personal business on work time. By personal business, the study understand the distinction between making personal calls to increase your off-side business and calling your wife to find out how your sick child is doing. 2. Abusive behavior Too many businesses are filled with general managers and employers who use their standing and power to mishandle or disregard others. Regrettably, unless the position you are in comprises you not to discriminate against race, gender or ethnic origin, there is often no legal defense against offensive behavior in the workplace. This behavior is consider very unprofessional and could cause you to lose your job. 3. Employee theft Conferring to a current analysis by Jack L. Hayes International, one out of every 40 employees in 2012 was found appropriating either money or stuff from their employer. Even more surprising is that these employees embezzle on average 5.5 times more than thieves do ($715 vs $129). Employee deception is also on the up rise, whether its check meddling, not documenting sales in order to affecting expense repayments. The respectable news from the ERC analysis is that most American employees and employers do the correct thing. The analysis shows that most of us obey our companys ethical standards of behavior, and we are eager to testify unlawful activity when we see it happened. However, for those of us who monitor ethical behavior in the business, there are some worrying tendencies in the ERC survey. The fraction of employees who knowledgeable some form of retribution for describing non-ethical behavior soared from 15 percent to 22 percent. Trust in the ethics of senior front-runners decreased from 68 percent to 62 percent. When it comes to the ethical business, we may be on a downhill slide (Philadelphia Business Journal, 2015). The Moral Development of Huckleberry Finn Essays -- The Adventures of
Huck Finn, a narcissistic and unreliable young boy, slowly morphs into a courteous figure of respect and selflessness. After Pap abducts the young and civilized Huck, Huck descends into his old habits of lies and half-truths. However, upon helping a runaway slave escape, Huck regains morality and a sense of purpose. Throughout The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, Huck lies to characters, casting the authenticity of the story into doubt but illustrating Huckââ¬â¢s gradual rejection of lying for himself and a shift towards lying for others. Huck rejects lying early in the novel, a testament to his successful training bestowed upon him by the Widow Douglass and other townspeople. Huck begins the story by lecturing the reader that The Adventures of Tom Sawyer contained lies about him, and that everyone has lied in his or her lives (11). Huckââ¬â¢s admittance of the lies contained in the previous book about him demonstrates his early dedication to truth in the novel. Later, Tom forces Huck to return to the Widow Douglass where he continues learning how to be ââ¬Å"sivilizedâ⬠(11). When Huck returns, the Widow Douglass teaches him the time when lying is appropriate, improving Huckââ¬â¢s sometimes unreliable moral directions. After Huck spends enough time with the Widow Douglass and her sister, Miss Watson, Huck begins enjoying the routine of his new life (26). Huck, a coarse character prior to the beginning of the novel, enjoys his education more and more, and displays promise for a cultured future. Pri or to the arrival of Pap, Huck sells his money to Judge Thatcher avoiding telling his father a lie (27). Even though his father is an appalling man and an alcoholic, Huck respects him and avoids lying to him by selling Ju... ...e to Miss Watson (224). Huckââ¬â¢s own morals replace the belief society gave him and convince him that turning in Jim would be wrong. As a result, he resolves that he will set Jim free again, and continues helping him. While Huckââ¬â¢s constant lies while narrating the novel makes the authenticity of certain events doubtful, it serves a much greater purpose of allowing the reader to indirectly see the continued improvements and declines of Huckââ¬â¢s moral judgment. At some points, he serves only himself; at other key events in the story, he creates elaborate lies that help others. The moral development of Huck makes itself apparent in the changing lies of Huck, allowing readers to observe the events taking place within Huckââ¬â¢s mind with ease. Work Cited Twain, Mark. Could Schizophrenia Be The Answer To The Mysterious Vampire Legend :: essays research papers fc
Could Schizophrenia be the Answer to the Mysterious Vampire Legend? The vampire legend and many behaviors and experiences of schizophrenics seem to share many common traits. The traits that are most recognizable are "fears of being enclosed, periods of semistarvation or complete starvation, which can be associated with periodic gorging, reversal of the day-night cycle, and a preoccupation with or dread of mirrors" (Kayton 304). Though the term 'schizophrenia' or 'demence precoce' was only introduced in 1852 (Boyle 43), behaviors of people affected by this illness have been documented much earlier. The concept of a dead person returning in his living physical form and feeding on the living is considered a vampire. The vampire is believed to also be capable of transmitting his vampirism to those he infect or bite. Kayton recognizes that though this belief has been found in early writings of the Babylonians, Semites, and Egyptians, the most famous vampire scare swept Europe in 1730. This vampire epidemic lasted approximately five years (305). The legend consistency continues with adolescent and young adult schizophrenia. It is presented to us that young suicide victims were most likely believed to become vampires and attack members of their families (Kayton 304-05). Suicide was not an uncommon event among schizophrenic patients (Boyle 255). Suicide patients are a very important part of this equation because according to the legend in England suicides were buried with a stake pierced in or near the heart. This was to ensure that that the ghost of the person would not come back and haunt the living, to prevent the suicide victim from becoming a vampire (Kayton 305). In Dracula, Lucy was killed after she had already started to haunt the living. She was killed after with a stake driven through her heart as a "duty to others" and to the dead, so that she may truly be "passed away", as "God's true dead" (266, 277-279). Some documented cases of vampirism indicate that sometimes the psychodynamics' of vampires can erupt into materialized behavioral psychopathology (Kayton 304). For example, Vincenz Verzeni an Italian in 1872, a Frenchman named Leger in 1827, and a German Fritz Haarman demonstrate to the rare appearance of clinical vampirism (Kayton 306). Haarman himself killed approximately 24 adolescent males. This is interesting since many believe that vampires only attack those of the opposite sex. Even Bram Stoker's Dracula disproves this belief when the Count (Dracula) informs the three vampire women that Jonathan belongs to him (55).

Leadership Theories Essay -- Trait Theory
Trait Theory ââ¬Å"Leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goalâ⬠(Northouse, 2010, pg. 3). In an increasingly politically correct, democratic societyââ¬âwhere equality of treatment and equity of outcome oftentimes overshadow individual performanceââ¬âtrait theory of leadership has managed to survive. Instead of focusing on the context of a specific leadership situation or the subordinates in an organization, trait theory targets only the man or woman in charge. Essentially, trait theory suggests that potential leaders and great leaders who have already demonstrated success are best analyzed in a vacuum. While trait theory may have fallen in an out of favor over the past century, it does have certain advantages that are especially pertinent to those in the military. Before treading any further into its occupational applicability, however, the reader will benefit from a brief survey of trait theoryââ¬â¢s origins, approach, strengths, and critiques. Origins Arguably the first approach to the study of leadership, the trait approach was employed in the field long before it was tackled in the classroom. After all, Sun Tzu preached ââ¬Å"know your enemyâ⬠(Sun Tzu, 2006 pg. 34) long before Socrates entreated students to ââ¬Å"know thyselfâ⬠(Brickhouse, 1996, pg. 74). From ancient battlefields to philosophical mysteries, understanding the inherent characteristics of a person has proven a worthy goal. Peopleââ¬â¢s aspirations to leadership however, had yet to be matched with a theoretical basis for many years. It was not until the early 20th century that the topic found itself under the scholarââ¬â¢s gaze. Approach Initial studies often focused on the ââ¬Å"great manâ⬠approach, whereby already s... ... pg. 26). Together, trait theory and LMX theory can help explain not only how perceptions are formed about individuals, but how those perceptions can be detrimental to the organization. More specifically, by using trait theory to form an immediate assessment on an individual, a leader is more likely to place that individual in the in-group or out-group. As a future platoon leader, it is especially important for me to maintain a vigilant stance toward bias. As the stress of the position mounts, I know that I will be more likely to resort to spontaneous judgments about people. Depending how the given situation is resolved, the soldiers involved (or left uninvolved) may feel as if they are members of an in-group or out-group. By knowing and employing these and other theories to my advantage, I hope to emerge as an adaptable and deliberate leader of soldiers.

Human Services Agency Interview Essay
The Human Service field is vast with different approaches based on uniquely meeting individualââ¬â¢s needs. Some of these needs are met through interdisciplinary knowledge, placing concentration on preventive measures as well as correcting errors of life, and up-holding responsibilities of enhancing the meaning of life. Human Services profession is one, which supports enhanced methods of service by focusing on direct services, and by enhancing accessibility, responsibility, and organization among professionals and agencies in Human Service departments,(Martin, 2007). The organization I chose is Progressive HealthCare Providers that provide services for the developmentally disable who have physical and mental problems. Individuals with mental, physical disabilities as well as behavioral problems are candidates for Group Homes. These individuals are no longer secluded but are visible members of society. The use of single family houses was part of a design to incorporate disabled individuals into communities and minimize the embarrassment of being placed in a facility, which provides special care. I conducted an interview with Pleshetta Davis an administrator with Progressive HealthCare Providers. I decided to use a phone interview made by an online request. A letter was not used because mail delivery is often a problem this time of year. Pleshetta Davis was glad to be of service answering 10 questions that I had prepared for the interview, such as * Type of Human Service provided * How long has PHP been in Service * Mission of PHP * How does PHP receive funding * Affordability to clients * Populace served Influence on Communities * Common Clinical Issues * Training programs for Employees * New programs implemented Pleshetta Davis answers to the questions in the interview were very thought evoking. The mission statement were a set of goals that were to promote public and private partnership in health and human services, promote excellence and innovation in the delivering of healthcare services, remove the profit motivation from decision making, encourage innovated approaches to providing health and human services, (Davis, 2010). This organization has been in service since 1990 and services three states Louisiana, Florida, and Alabama. PHP offers more than 500 beds to individuals whom exhibit developmentally disabilities. This organization implements public-based housing and life-skill programs. PHP came into communities to provided support to disable individuals by providing opportunities to live and participate in his or her community, and reach ones full potential. Florida, Louisiana, and Alabama companies are Intermediate Care Facilities for people with Developmental Disabilities. The facilities are licensed under Title XIX to provide residential, educational, medical, social and behavioral services to individuals who have developmental disabilities. The goal is to help residents learn basic skills so they can live with little supervision, or none. Staff members ensure that clients receive any outside or community service care they need, such as physical therapy, education, medical care, or vocational training This organization is a small nonprofit human service provider that provides help to the disable whose disability is physical and mental. This took me back to the obligations and objectives of Human Service Professionals to understand the nature of human systems through individual, group, organization, community, society, and their major interactions. Human Service providers develop understandings of how group dynamics, organizational structure, the organization of communities, national policies and how human problems are by-products of social systems, (Martin, 2007). Clinical issues were at a minimum such as group homes not welcome in certain communities, finding government support programs such as jobs for clients, day habilitation programs that would take the clients, and eeping staff. This organization met my career goals. Human Service professionals are efficient and work with different ethnic groups who have broad ranges of issues. Caregivers must use a range of interventions to work with different ethnic groups with different cultures, and lifestyles. In this setting caregivers work to improve personal social function of clients enlisted in this program by providing or referring clients for education, training, employment, and personal growth in home settings. Clients are trained for independent living and are placed in society to become productive citizens. This interview although conducted over the phone was very professional, and Pleshetta Davis set aside valuable time in her busy schedule to accommodate me. She stated that the organization sometimes send exceptional workers in their system to college or match college funds, (Davis, 2010). She received her degree in Human Service Management through Louisiana Tech University. She seemed very sincere asking me to give their company consideration when I have finished my degree.
